I had not heard of the holiday, #BLACKLOVE DAY until I came across a YouTube video with LeShelle Smith, Blogger and Host of the Minority Report who was interviewing Ayo Handy-Kendi, Founder of the African American Holidays Association and creator of #BLACKLOVE DAY.
Ayo Handy-Kendio shared why people from the African Diaspora need holidays, celebrations and rituals that promote unity and healing. Black Love Day is one of many days of recognition created that is not rooted in the false idea of white supremacy or consumerism that drains our communities of resources. Celebrating Black Love Day is an alternative to Valentines Day - 24 hours to celebrate Black Love – love of the Creator, oneself, our biological family of loved ones as well as the Black Community as we represent the entire Black Race.
