Anyone who knows me know that I've been ROC'N my Locs for over 25 years and it has been my signature look throughout my natural hair modeling career. Who would have thought that I, Miss Roc-A-Natural would do the big loc chop?
I was torn about my decision to do the big loc chop and it begin to weigh heavily on my mind if I was making the right decision. I was truly in love with my beautiful locs, but the weight was too much for my soft and very fine texture. Despite my regular trimmings by my stylist, Doreen Douglas-Brown, Doreen's House of Style, Staten Island, N.Y., the weight caused excessive thinning. I also wanted to be an inspiration to my sisters in the struggle of thinning hair or balding that they can still Roc-A-Natural confidently and not be dependent on wearing the "cap".
I did it and it feels great! Thank you Doreen's House of Style for the encouragement and doing the big loc chop and Doc Hollywood Stylist at Khamit Kinks, 400 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, N.Y. for giving my natural style! A huge THANK YOU to my Sissy, Rona Latta for leading the way 2 years ago when she did the big loc chop after turning 50 and being inspired by my Sister Friend, Arleathia Howard and several friends and associates who have been ROC'N their short natural!
I am now in the pursuit of healthier hair and have embraced my new natural. It has been 25 years and I forgot what my loose natural hair feels like. I'm not worried though as I know it will take time, but that is the beautiful thing about natural hair!
To start with my new routine, I will be using moisturizing silicone-free conditioner, Body By R.A.N B-Butter, eco-styler gel for the wash and go style, satin scarf, natural brush and the Magic Brush. These are the main things I will need for my step back into loose hair. Just like any transition, it takes time to get used to things – This is what I am telling myself! Get use to my natural texture by washing (no-pooing) and just moisturizing with Body By R.A.N B-Oil oil and see what my texture is like when wet and dry first – without any defining products.
Next, I am throwing away any expectations of what my hair "should" look like.
I believe throwing away all of my thoughts and expectations about my loose texture is a great way of accepting what my hair is and loving it! It makes styling much easier too and know all textures are beautiful!
For the first week/days will be all about moisturizing and getting my loose hair as healthy as possible! I haven’t really been trying to style my hair as it is too short for anything other than moisturizing and go. I hardly used any gels or heavy products. I am working on making sure that my loose hair is clean and very moisturized. I also plan to care for my hair with deep conditioning, without many/any styling products – to get it back into good health. Focus on my ends with Body By R.A.N B-Butter, 100% natural moisturizer from head to toe for nourishment, cleaning with caring gentle products and detangling after each wash for the return of my healthy hair.
