RAN Tip of The Week! Herbs Are Medicine by Zakiyyah Maakheper-Ast, "The Herbalist", Sacre

Herbal medicine--also called botanical medicine or phytomedicine--refers to using a plant's seeds, beries, roots, leaves, bark, or flowers for medicinal purposes. Herbalism has a long tradition of use outside of conventional medicine. It is becoming more mainstream as improvements in analysis and quality control along with advances in clinical research show the value of herbal medicine in the treating and preventing disease.

Plants had been used for medicinal purposes long before recorded history. Ancient Chinese and Egyptian papyrus writing describe medicinal uses for plants as early as 3,000 BC. Indigenous cultures such as African and Native American used herbs in their healing rituals, while others developed traditional medical systems (such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese) in which herbal therapies were used.

It is now cold and flu season. If you are seeking natural remedies, you probably already are aware of the use of natures herbs. However, many are bland and bitter (especially those that are beneficial for us) and are not pleasant tasting. Zakiyyah Maakheper-Ast, "The Herbalist", Sacred Healing 7 Herb Center has the REMEDY: mix them with raw, natural honey and you'll never experience their unpleasant taste! For colds, to eliminate mucus congestion and coughs, ESPECIALLY FOR CHILDREN, mix equal parts of the herbs coltsfoot, yerba santa, wild cherry bark, mullein, and ¼ part echinacea. These are very common and available at most local botanicas, health food or herb stores. Mix them together and grind to a powder using a coffee grinder, then mix with honey to a paste consistency. Simply take by the ¼, ½ or full teaspoonful as necessary. First time users should begin with the smallest amount then increase the amount. You can also add the mixture to a cup of boiling water and, "violla", a soothing, ready made cup of sweetened tea! She is in the process of publishing her first (in a series of four) herb book, “The Energetics of How Herbs Heal, without Drugs or Surgery.” She also currently offers a variety of beginners and advanced herb courses, a 5-hour hands on herb preparation workshop; and corporate health seminars/inservice events. Zakiyyah specializes in herbal formula products such as teas, capsules, tinctures, powders, creams, salves, herbal clay for fibroids, herbal honey, and tonics for all general illnesses.
