ROC'N Wednesday! What Do You Know About Kwanzaa? by Gregory Taylor

If you don't know about Kwanzaa, allow Mr. Gregory Taylor, a family man, activist, actor and director, who has been celebrating Kwanzaa for over thirty years and want to educate you about the meaning of Kwanzaa and make a difference in the African-American community.

There are so many misconceptions regarding this meaningful and beautiful cultural holiday. Kwanzaa is NOT a religious holiday. It is not meant to replace Christmas for Black People. Kwanzaa is a Swahili word that means "first fruits of the harvest". It was created as a celebration that honors our cultural, heritage and traditional values. It consists of seven principles; one for each day of the week: Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self determination), Ujima (Collective Work & Responsibility) Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose) Kuumba (Creativity) and Imani (Faith).

To learn more, bring the family at the Roc-A-Natural "H.O.T.S Heal Ones Total Self Pavilion: A Kujichagulia Day of Healing and Kwanzaa Celebration, Sunday, December 27, 2015 from 12:30pm-1:30pm at The Mt. Sinai Center for Community Enrichment, 382 Jersey St, Staten Island, NY as I present the history of Kwanzaa, exponding on these principals and explaining how to use symbols associated with Kwanzaa. The symbols; Mkeka (decorative mat), Mahindi (corn), Mishumaa (candle holder kinara with seven candles), Kikombe cha Umoja (communal cup for pouring libation, Zawadi (gifts), a poster of the seven principles and a red, black and green flag.

Hopefully, with a clear understanding of what Kwanzaa means, you will also make it a part of your family's December 26, 2015 through January 1 tradition.
