Featuring Natural Hair By Nerissa...How to achieve the perfect 'Coil Out'
1. Start with a hydrating shampoo; you want something that will cleanse your scalp, and hair without being too harsh.
2. You will want to follow up with a moisturizing conditioner. This can be a leave-in or a rinse out. If you feel your hair is particularly dry you can sit under a hooded dryer for 30 mins with conditioner on. Quick Tip: if you do not have a hooded dryer; put on conditioner, plastic cap, and wrap your head with a towel. Your body heat will create the day affect as the dryer. Leave on for 30mins.
3. Once hair is cleaned and conditioned you will need to start the detangling process. This is best done while the hair is wet. To achieve this style you will need to make sure your hair is free of all knots. If you have a tangle teaser or denmen brush this would be a perfect time to use it.
4. Now that the hair is detangled you will need to saturate it with Setting Lotion. You can use the regular liquid Setting Lotion in a spray bottle or the foam brands. Quick Tip: Foam Setting Lotion dries faster. Also if you have a empty bottle foam bottle you can pour any liquid Setting Lotion into it and it will foam.
5. Part the hair into section according to how big or small you want to curls. After parting you will want to place your comb at the base of the section with the teeth of the comb pointing toward the hair. Put that piece of hair into the comb and begin to twist in a downward motion, slightly pulling as you twist. A "twist" comb or "rat tail" comb would be the best tool for this style. When you get to the bottom you should have one coil. Continue this all over the head.
6. Once complete, you will need to sit under a hooded dryer for 30-40 mins depending on the thickness of your hair.
7. Once you are all dry, spray your hair with a light oil sheen. Now you can begin to separate the coils. Pick up one coil and while holding with one hand take one finger from the other hand and put it at the base of the coil. Stick you finger through the base and pull up. If the coils get frizzy during the separation, simple twirl each piece around your finger to smooth it out.
